The Winnower is a new service that academic bloggers have been waiting for. It is a platform that allow blogs to benefits from many of the services typically provided by regular journals. Academic bloggers can submit their posts for publication on the platform. The process is extremely simple. The software is even capable of retrieving the post from a URL. The system generates pdf files that look like reprints from a journal. The feature that I like the most is the possibility to archive the blog post and get a DOI. This makes it possible to track the impact of the post using article level metrics provided by Altmetric. It will be interesting to see compare the impact of blog posts with the impact of regular publications.
The service is still in beta test but it is worth giving it a try. By the way, the Winnower is a project led by Josh Nicholson, a Virginia Tech graduate student.
