Description: We created a training module to brief biosecurity agents on the latest developments in synthetic biology and trained 11 federal agents in a weeklong course. The training included lectures on various topics relating to biosecurity, 26.5 hours of practice in laboratory techniques, and visits to various sites engaged in biotechnology research including industrial scale production facilities and a community laboratory. Students came away with a basic understanding of the techniques required to synthesize and express a gene and an improved comprehension of the environment and cultural practices surrounding synthetic biology.
