Bruce Alberts, Marc W. Kirschner, Shirley Tilghman, and Harold Varmus  published a perspective on the current state of the US biomedical research enterprise in PNAS. The perspective is pretty bleak but their high-level and courageous position is very useful because it helps depersonalize the challenges we are all facing on a daily basis. Also acknowledging the problems is a first step toward finding solution. Interestingly, we have already implemented some of their recommendation on a small scale in the lab. This will be the topic of a follow-up blog entry.
