The open access journal PeerJ is changing the open-access publication business model. Instead of a charging a publishing fee per article, it is a relying on a membership model. Each author pays a $99 lifetime membership to the journal but do not incur publication fees afterwards. The journal has been setting up partnerships with institutions of higher education including Virginia Tech. To encourage our authors to make their scholarship freely and immediately available, the University Libraries will automatically pay the cost of a Basic Publication Plan for each Virginia Tech author when a paper is accepted for publication in PeerJ. The membership remains active if authors leave Virginia Tech.

So, fellow Hokies, send your papers to PeerJ they will be published at not cost to you (as long as they pass the rigorous peer-review process).
